Experts give sugar producers a marketing update

August 7, 2019

Agri-Pulse reporter Ed Maixner interviewed Sugar Association President and CEO Courtney Gaine, PHD, at the 36th annual International Sweetener Symposium held August 6, 2019, in Asheville, NC. Gaine moderated a panel discussion about consumer’s perceptions of sugar and the need to reformulate how consumers view sugar in their diets, based on realities of actual markets and human health.

Maixner writes:

“[Gaine] points out the Dietary Guidelines for Americans have been advising people to restrict sweeteners intake since 1980, and in 2015 finally settled on a suggestion to limit added sugars to 10% of daily calories.”

“Health officials have linked high sweeteners intake to diabetes and obesity. ‘The concept of moderation we definitely support,’ Gaine said, adding her belief that the 10% share of calories may be appropriate.”
