Sugar Association updates its sweetener labeling petition after 2 years of regulatory inaction

“In the food and beverage space, there’s been a lot of action in terms of alternative sweeteners as well. Since the Sugar Association’s petition was filed, 2,318 new products using alternative sweeteners have been introduced in the United States, according to Mintel statistics referenced in the updated petition. That adds up to 300% growth in prevalence of alternative sweeteners in food in the last five years, the petition states.”

Sustainability surging to forefront for sugar industry

Sustainability “wasn’t on the table” when the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans was completed, said Courtney Gaine, PhD, president and chief executive officer of The Sugar Association at the 2022 International Sweeteners Symposium, but “the dialogue is getting louder” to include sustainability as part of the 2025 Guidelines. She noted that the definition of what constitutes a sustainable diet is unclear.
